KELP FORESTS

We asked two experts, Caro & Tim from Cornish Seaweed Company if they could answer a few questions about seaweed:

1. How do we keep Kelp farming a sustainable practice?

“We have to make sure to not put farms in sensitive areas where it interferes with existing ecosystems. For instance above existing kelp beds or in whale migration routes. We should also keep farms from becoming too big and becoming monocultures. Farms should also not compete for nutrients with existing flora."

2. What’s a safe way to forage them?

Tom directed us to the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide who provide harvesting codes of conduct:

~ Harvest only by hand ~

Respect surrounding wildlife ~

Collect less than 1/3 of each plant to allow for regrowth ~

~ Harvest sparsely, only taking a small percentage of total stock ~

Rotate harvesting areas ~

Harvest during active growth season~

3. What is your favourite Seaweed recipe?

Tom’s favourite are ‘Dulse Potato Cakes’ for those Sunday mornings:

Dulse has long been used as a vegan alternative to bacon with its salty, smokey, bacony taste so works really well here.”
